Ava Like Lava is a name you’re going to want to become familiar with – if you aren’t already. Her new EP, Malice in Wonderland, is a vibrant and diverse exploration of introspection and trying to figure out what adulthood is.
Lead singles “See Level” and “90’s Anxiety” perfectly set the tone for what the project is: a well thought out embodiment of all the facets that make up popular music. Catchy choruses supported by verses both rapped and sung see her success balancing reinventing the wheel while never steering too far from it. With heavy trap influences, Ava Like Lava adopts a style currently being dominated on the local scene by the likes of Angie oeh.
“Global Hot Sauce” addresses trust issues and learning to move in your own lane and not letting people bring you down, while “Flow 52” closes out the EP in a brilliant way that serves as a final step in the journey of becoming oneself after a gruelling journey of introspection. The tune has drum and bass elements and sees her delivering honest lines throughout – ending with a prolific realisation in the form of an impressive rhyme scheme: nothing is perfect, the best you can do is try.
Malice in Wonderland is a powerful testament to growth and the human spirit. The fact that Ava Like Lava is honest through it all elevates the brilliant usage of genres and mediums on this offering. It’s got something for everyone within its four short tracks and stands the test of unique sensibilites.
