On Saturday, 25 November at 20h30 Braamfontein jazz venue, The Orbit, hosts a launch party to celebrate The Orbit Vinyl Sessions now being held every week.
“We will make The Orbit Vinyl Sessions official with some of the country’s hottest and most legendary music and vinyl heads: Boeta Gee, Zara Julius, and DJ Kenzhero,” says the one of the venue’s owners, Kevin Naidoo. “The Orbit Vinyl Sessions have been running for long enough to launch the religion of a night get down to some good old vinyl. With these sessions, we say we can dance to Kwaito, Hip Hop, Afrobeat, broken beats, Salsa, House, R&B and still be Jazz – that you don’t have to be “purist” to be a true jazz lover. Jazz is culture. Jazz is everywhere.”
With these sessions, the venue will tip its hat to vinyl’s long-service to documenting the many histories of music, including Jazz, and its influence across culture.
Naidoo feels: “Vinyl has been key to documenting Jazz and its journey. Therefore, it is important to celebrate the vinyl and its beautiful era that never quite seems to leave the contemporary, regardless of how “low-key” vinyl’s occupation of space(s) may be.” Playing a wide variety of sounds will be DJ Kenzhero, Boeta Gee and Zara Julius. “These three names alone are nothing short of steaming hot, imagine them together!”
From December onwards, different DJs will take to the turn tables downstairs at The Orbit Vinyl Sessions every Friday. R100 gets you in (it’s R100 for the 25th but R50 every Friday). Before this art form known as Jazz became misconstrued as music only for the “sophisticated and intellectual”, it was the people’s music, played in shebeens, klevas, for modest homes and brothels – it still is. Jazz is for dancing and cerebral appreciation at the same time,” says Naidoo.
It is with this in mind that The Orbit started The Orbit Vinyl Sessions, which will become an official part of JoBurg’s weekly party calendar.
