The multi-talented Kirstyhas released her debut EP The Wings Beneath My Feathers and with her fusion of classical, R&B, and jazz she’s bringing a new voice to the pop scene.
With its sweeping, emotive compositions it sometimes sounds more like the soundtrack to an indie love film than a pop EP.
“Fly Away” balances out the realist-romantic dichotomy as it moves between staccato verses and flowing, string-based choruses as Kirstyfinds closure in letting love go – before “Fantasy” comes along and sweeps you up into a world of day-dreams and longing gazes.
It’s the sound of wandering around hoping, and even half-expecting to run into your beloved no matter how slim the chances.
The final track, “Distraction” brings unexpected depth to the EP. If “Fantasy” is about the highs of being in love then this song is about the lows. Melancholic keys, guitars and drums bring back the familiar feeling of knowing you’re being swept down a bad path but not being sure if you can get off it.
This is a cinematic, emotional introduction to a musician that’s re-interpreting how pop can be made.
