Anthemic is the operative word when it comes to Bongi Archi’s debut single “Excuse Me”. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and former Idols SA alum – who rose to prominence under the name Bongi Mthombeni – has undergone a career metamorphosis, which sees him bursting onto the pop scene with a radio-ready ballad that commands attention from the get-go.
From the very first note, it becomes apparent that Bongi has brought his love of gospel along with him on his journey into pop – that, and a vocal resonance that can only come from years spent performing in theatre.
Expansive, piano-led melodies and a heady drumline form the core of “Excuse Me”’s sound, which builds into a climactic chorus aided by the (albeit unobtrusive) addition of a choir. The lyrics, while simple, are laden with hope and the promise of new love, both of which Bongi really brings to life with his captivatingly rich vocals.
Accompanying this stirring single is a music video that puts Bongi at the centre of attention – literally. Debonairly dressed, surrounded by some snazzy lighting and sporting the emphatic and emotive body language of someone with a background in the performing arts, he sings right to the camera and from behind a piano – and he does it with flair.
