Zebraman’s latest single may be called “SUNLIGHT”, but the accompanying music video – directed and shot by videographer Estiaan Esterhuyse – is dark, a bit bizarre and drenched in gold liquid. It’s the Afro-pop-slash-indie band’s debut music video and they’re not holding back on the creativity, instead erring on the side of abstract in the name of art (and music).
The kind of thing that can’t really be described, the music video for “SUNLIGHT’” sees a dark room, two actors, projections and gold paint (or some sort of paint adjacent liquid) turned into a surprisingly fitting visual aid for an equally eclectic song. A synth-laden bop that falls somewhere between the soundtrack of Stranger Things and a Johnny Clegg hit, the song has a unique South African-ness to it that makes it a fun, albeit cheesy, listen.
The track itself is, in summary, an equal parts abstract and upbeat offering from the Potch-based band. It’s vibey (bouncing synths and hard-hitting drums will do that), the lyrics don’t take themselves too seriously (something about biscuits in a blender) and Viljoen’s retro-esque vocals tie it all together seamlessly.
