Meet CASH Of Hearts, the South African rapper pushing a deft mix of hip hop, trap and Afrobeats

A surging chorus of gospel voices and a staccato piano accompaniment introduce CASH Of Hearts’ latest single. Titled “SO GOOD (INTERLUDE)”, its striking opening is deftly on par with something you might hear Kanye release, only this was made on local shores.

Hailing from the East Rand of Johannesburg, CASH Of Hearts’ debut album Serotonin (The Forever Edition) was released almost two years ago, followed by a sophomore offering, Riley. (A Quarantine Playlist By Oct 21 Sound.), that came out this month, and a steady stream of singles thrown into the mix too. Although I wouldn’t say CASH is simply a ‘rapper’.

Bringing together elements of amapiano, Afro House, afrobeats and trap house, CASH pushes a truly bold sound, unlike any hip-hop artist I’ve heard in a long while. And while I can’t quite pin down what exactly makes him so unique, I think it has something to do with the incredible production level of his tracks – his latest produced by Italian producer Malugano Marco.

Now a glorious gospel anthem intertwined with trap melodies, “SO GOOD (INTERLUDE)” is a concise attack on the senses – quirky, catchy, and expertly put together. I repeat, I wouldn’t think twice if I heard a single of this calibre lurking on the likes of The Life of Pablo or Jesus Is King.

Still, while CASH’s stylistic influences are strongly felt, he’s managed to develop a dazzling sense of artistic identity in the short space of his quickly budding career.
