While it is not the first time we get a fusion of the two seemingly disparate genres – trap and choral church music this time around – CASH of Heart‘s new music video for “SO GOOD”, which serves as the lead single of his upcoming album, RILEY (DELUXE), sends listeners on a sonic journey of praise and worship.
The video opens up with a shot of a holy cathedral, however that doesn’t prepare listeners for the beautiful eruption of the piano and angelic voices bursting into the phrase “So glad that the Lord has set me free!” – and we are instantly whisked off to church, while hip hop is once again resurrected.
Hailing from the east of Johannesburg and ushering us straight to the heavens, the video’s simplicity urges you to listen to the words of the gospel, where CASH is sharing gratitude for all the blessings and growth that have made him a better artist. He’s been experimenting with some fresh sounds lately to add more versatility to his catalogue, and this is immediately evident in the beautiful mix of punchlines and the backing of a euphoric spiritual choir.
There is something cathartic about the responsive church singing of a gospel choir, but there is even more joy if the song gets both the genres right. As a (non-genre-specific) rapper, CASH has cemented himself on my playlist as a transformer. I appreciate an artist who can serve listeners this, that, and the other.
