“Pendulum Soul”, the second of five planned singles from Peasant, broils and seethes with the hardcore outfit’s trademark relentless rage.
From tense, creeping intro to sudden and unresolved ending, “Pendulum Soul” spits vitriolic with barely a moment to catch one’s breath. Rasped seemingly from the pits of hell, lyrics like “rot under the surface/ I find myself again, swinging alone” and “walls are caving in/ living upside down/ fuckin’ torment abound” paint a picture of meaninglessness and misery spurred on by buzzsaw guitars and tempestuous drums.
In lurid gold and then hellish red the video is a restless nightmare that flits between the temporal and other-worldly, our protagonist tossing and turning but ultimately trapped and tortured finds no relief in the sanctity of self.
Unlike its predecessor “Cape Death”, which strove to make a societal point, “Pendulum Soul” focuses all its attention inwards with a kind of fury that, whether you like hardcore music or not, will force you to pay attention from beginning to end.
