This one has been a long time coming. Over two years in the making – with “I’m With You” having dropped back in 2021 – Matthew Mole’s long-awaited fourth album delivers on everything we love about him and more.
Wake Up, It’s Morning is infectiously positive, hinged on a myriad of reasons to seize the day, despite what life might be serving up at that moment in time. It’s an extended – read 13-track – reminder to find new compassions each morning. All this delivered through Mole’s quintessentially vibrant indie-pop lens – think kick-drum, uke-strums and the occasional synth bop to flesh things out.
The enduring reason here is love – with saccharine, heartfelt depth, Mole pays homage to his long standing relationship within the nostalgic bars of “Never Felt Like This” and “Say You’ll Be Mine”, the punchy polkadot rhythm of “Turtle Dove”, and the ’80’s-flecked ode to enduring adoration that is “Countryside”.
But it’s not all ballads and serenades, he also gets real on self-love in the rhythm-bop “Always By My Side”, and weathering the ongoing storms life throws in the light acoustics “Good Things”.
Pillowy synths, driving rhythm, familiar acoustics and unwaveringly cutesy lyricism finds Matthew Mole just as familiar as he ever was, just a little more polished, a little more honest, and enduringly catchy. You’ll have this one on repeat.
