Amy Jones pairs Afrobeats and crooning sentimentalities on her debut album My Forever Friend

Amy Jones lets rhythm take to the fore in her debut album My Forever Friend. Crooning love songs meet thumping bass beats of various shapes and forms to lend punch to her sentimentalities.

Weaving irresistible groove and momentum into her tracks, the album is a heady progressive Afro-pop montage of her life experiences, erring only on the basis of repetition and the occasional song stretching on a little too long for comfort. Regardless, Jones impresses with steady production value and floaty vocalism.

“Alone No More” unpacks what it is to be quite ready for a relationship with driving Afro nuance. Funky rhythm and uplifting cadence gloss over the lingering disappointment which suffuses the track.

Then comes a barrage of unapologetically lovestruck bangers. And while they largely navigate a similar story, they’re delivered with punchy sonic variance. “Everlasting Love” is chiming, backed by a thudding liquid beat, “Beautiful” pulls on Afro-beats influence within its doting parameters, while “For You” favours a brassy rhythm.

“Try” wraps things up with breathy, floaty textures and a lazer synth melody backing a promise to always try your best when it comes to love – and Amy Jones’ punchy emotionality shines.
