Pretoria native Onty Siyere is a budding R&B singer who incorporates old and new elements of the genre to create his sound. His new single “Perfect Love” explores love’s disappointments and holding onto hope for a better future in romance.
The song is quintessentially themed. It tells the story of a man going through a turbulent end to a relationship and lamenting his loss. He later comes to terms with the fact that “perfect love” doesn’t necessarily last forever. Onty Siyere sings and raps in turn, taking on aspects of trap soul, while the guitar overlay of the song has it keeping with those R&B trends from the ’90’s.
The visuals follow its narrative. Siyere argues on the phone with his beloved before he paces the neighbourhood contemplating his situation. He is later seen waiting for someone who doesn’t show up and he is left nursing a broken heart. The simplicity of the video takes nothing away from the song, it instead enhances its aspects of loneliness.
Onty Siyere delivers a palatable singing and rap performance that colours within the lines of a working formula. The combination of a familiar theme and a well produced song, he manages to keep listeners intrigued and, in moments wondering if they’ll ever find a “Perfect Love”.
