The Drums in SA

The perks to being online for most of the day is that you get to see news break almost immediately.

Kanye West in SA being announced a few minutes ago is a prime example.

Yesterday was also one of those days.

We-Are-Awesome announced they are bringing Brooklyn-based trio The Drums down in November as the 3rd part of their 4 part series.

Live, The Drums are now actually a 5-piece according to their bio, but whether or not the other two travel remains to be seen – they’re not on the poster so I doubt it.

Now I had a few people ask me why The Drums are such a big deal or alternatively, why they should care about them. So today I decided that I’d attempt to give you a few reasons. What you do with this info is purely up to you.

Firstly, you need to read this interview with Jacob Graham (bass and synth) where he talks about being an “up-and-coming band” columnist for NME, amongst other super informative things.

Then you need to listen to their debut self-titled album.  Indie to the core, the album is severed in half by ‘Down By The Water’, at which point you’ll probably start appreciating them a little more.

I’m not the biggest fan of their second album ‘Portamento’ but hey, that’s just me and if we’re going with Jonathan Pierce’s (vox) gospel then he reckons: “We’re a different band now.” Good for you.

Watch this short video of them below. They’re incredibly endearing, especially when Jonny talks about being broke.

Truthfully, CYHSY were average, Little Dragon were thoroughly entertaining (so I heard, I was in a tequila-induced coma at the time) and so this leads me to cross my fingers in the belief, but more so hope, that The Drums will be spectacular. I am a fan so if they’re not, my disappointment will probably cause me to be bitter.

All I ask is that the opening band/s be half decent. Remember when Beatenberg opened for Tallest Man On Earth? Ja, THAT’S an opening act. I rate Gateway Drugs and Yo Grapes would be epic. But, again, that’s just me. I’m sure Berry and co. are on top of things anyway.

Keep your eyes peeled for when tickets go on sale. I have a hunch these are going to fly.
