Currently based in the mother city, singer-songwriter George Kalukusha’s voice effortlessly engulfs his listeners into a consoling bubble of comfort. Born in Malawi, the songsmith has much to boast about, seeing that he’s featured on BBC Introducing, TEDx Lilongwe, Voice of America and Bloomberg TV in Germany just to name a few. Given his humble character, bragging is seldom (if ever) done.
Rather, when he’s not devoted to song writing, Kalukusha spends his time working with an array of NGOs, running song writing workshops aimed towards female empowerment or studying at AFDA. His interests make sense, considering the lyricism of most his material. ‘Good Blood’, a track Kalukusha performed at a Tedx event, highlights the effects of HIV, whether you’re personally infected or not.
Even disregarding Kalukusha’s smooth, Ray La Montagne-esque vocal tone, the artist’s contemporary storytelling style is one someone doesn’t merely skip over. In his latest single ‘Take Me Home’, an emotive string and piano melody sets a fantastic undercurrent for the track’s lyricism of nostalgic comfort. Backed by a confident but not overbearing band, Kalukusha’s voice fluently shines throughout.
