Amy Winehouse’s discography is a work of art, and it’s always a treat when someone new injects their own energy into one of her songs. Johannesburg-based duo Origami Honey have done just that with the release of their cover of “Stronger Than Me”, a heartfelt acoustic version of Winehouse’s jazzy offering.
The duo, comprising of Christine Glass (vocals) and Alex Palmantouras (guitar), formed in 2021 over a mutual love of music and the release of their “Stronger Than Me” cover is only the first step, with plans in the pipeline to release their very own EP later this year.
One of Winehouse’s lesser known songs, “Stronger Than Me” is a decidedly sassy offering which tackles an up-and-down relationship. It has a bold and somewhat cheeky energy, something which Glass captures almost flawlessly with her distinctive, layered vocals. A simple melody of textured, rhythmic chords is what allows her piping, jazz-edged vocals to shine and enable the duo to really capture the essence of the song – while the acoustic approach gives it a stripped-back appeal.
The perfect complement to the stripped-back song, the accompanying video (shot by Ulrich Fischer) is equally as unadorned yet undeniably intimate: a subtle performance in a dimly-lit studio.
