The Revival Co. show no sign of slowing down off the back of their first three successful events, this time bringing The Tazers to Cape Town to promote the Joburg rockers’ newest single “Outer Space.” The Tazers are known for their high energy shows and they did not disappoint in the slightest. The Tazers are not only a fine band but they are helping to build a platform for other local acts via their boutique music festival, That 70s Fest, held in Johannesburg.
The weekend kicked off on Friday night at EVOL with a stellar varied line-up of both seasoned and new local acts. The bill started off with newcomers Moskitos, a ’60s-inspired garage rock three-piece who are quickly cementing themselves as a local band not to be missed.
Elle E made her return to the stage which was greatly appreciated by all those acquainted with the DIY multi-instrumentalist. The bill also included Bam Bam Brown who is one of the most versatile guitarists and vocalists around, with fingers on several musical pies.
The bill finished off with Morena Leraba, the Basotho singer whose set at Endless Daze was the thing of legends. The artist has features on the 2019 Damon Albarn-produced, African Express album Egoli, and Major Lazer’s Music is the Weapon (Reloaded).
The Tazers kicked off their Cape Town tour by giving fans the type of wild performance that has earned them their must-see reputation. To put it simply, when they left the stage, the walls were sweating.
The next leg of the tour was at Aandklas in Stellenbosch. The night began with Nikola Vlok, whose multi-genre exploration was something to behold – the producer and instrumentalist has a voice that could put a spell on anyone. Tough Guy and post-punk brothers-in-arms, The Man Motels, each delivered killer sets that had the crowd primed for the headliners.
The Tazers whipped the crowd into a frenzy (I’m talking a mosh pit, crowd surfing – you know, the works) and I think it’s safe to say that they are one of the finest rock ‘n’ roll bands this country has to offer at the moment. Yndian Mynah closed off the set with their instrumental blend of post-punk and psych rock.
The following afternoon the last leg of the tour was at M-PIRE Music in Woodstock. Lucas Swart (Dangerfields) opened for the touring band with an acoustic set covering Radiohead and local legends The Very Wicked. The Tazers played their last show of the weekend and the tour was closed off by Revival Co. DJs (DJ Dick and Old Man Coyote, of course).
It is important that local audiences be exposed to bands of the calibre of The Tazers. Firstly, because these guys kick ass and take names. And secondly, and maybe more importantly, because they are the type of band who can inspire a group of friends to pick up instruments and form a band themselves. Thank you to Revival Co. for bringing them down – we are all the better for it.
