ShabZi Madallion has delivered another gem in the shape of a fifteen-track album, The Long Game. He describes the album title as fitting into what he has come to realise as a “long term love” for rap music and all its offerings, packaging other topics such as self-exploration and the process of working through one’s feelings.
“The Long Game” proves to be an ushering of feelings imbedded in pride and recognition of self-worth. A nod to a journey leading up to this point, as well as a taste of what’s in store for the rest of the album. Groove-driven to the point of feeling optimistic, it’s a clear glimpse into the depth of the content yet to be introduced.
“I’m Ready” declares heavier topics of what appears to be feelings of depression, disappointment and possibly betrayal. The weight of the lyrics settle in almost immediately and feelings are amplified through heavy instrumental backing – a potent combination bred to grab the ears – while “Blame Yourself” sustains feelings of accountability in the form of wide-stretching synths and encouraging groove: an effective combo that calls for self-challenging.
Overall, the album is utterly compelling and features artists who assist in investigating important topics that many may find they themselves grappling with.
