Metal band Doomtrigger release Enter the Cosmic, a heavy, angry, but predictable debut EP

Doomtrigger’s Enter the Cosmic does what’s required to be considered a decent metal EP but does so without rocking the boat in any way.

The EP was initially released back in April this year but somehow managed to slip under the radar until now. I say somehow because the EP has all the ingredients it needs to make it on to any and every metal-head’s playlist. It’s heavy, it’s dramatic, and it’s defined by undeniable rage.

Admittedly it’s not likely that any of the songs would stand out in said playlists. “Night Terror” brings the curtain down with much the same chaotic, angry energy that “Summon the Reaper” brought it up, and the same can be said for the songs in between.

Nonetheless, Enter the Cosmic does what it does well. The drums are heavy enough throughout to be earth-shattering with the right sound set-up and the guitars crunch and scratch with distorted abandon.

The screams and squeals of Jason Smith are contrasted nicely here and there by the clean vocals of Kenne Loubser, particularly in “Fierce Rivals” where they serve to balance the Smith’s fury. Adding just a hint of spacey-sophistication are subtle synth-lines that offer tasteful breaks from the overall heaviness.

Sure, Enter the Cosmic, isn’t likely to break any new ground in the metal world but it has everything it needs to make it, at the very least, a playlist filler.
