Meet Kwazi M: a soul-songstress from Soweto whose sound is fuelled by a tremendous energy for captivating African melodies.
Taking inspiration from Soweto’s rich history as the birthplace of both Kwaito music and kasi slang, Kwazi’s approach to songwriting is one of cultural integrity – underpinned by a dreaminess that dares to transport listeners someplace else.
A singer from a young age, she quit her job in 2019 to pursue a career in online radio, but subsequently began recording with an array of acclaimed local artists, including DJ Sabby, Drip and Flash Ikumkani.
Now here she is. Having inked a distribution deal with Electromode Ingrooves, her debut solo single “Spring” dropped last Friday, and three more tracks slated for release at the beginning of next year.
Littered with romantic keys and swooning R&B synths, “Spring” is a visceral experience true to its name. Evoking a warm feeling of intimacy, Kwazi’s contemporary vocals surface with astounding maturity. It feels like she’s been making music for years already, and certainly has her finger on the pulse when it comes to the artistic persona she’s curating.
It’s one of generosity, desire and a seething emotional intensity that will continue to deepen as she continues to carve a name for herself in the industry.
