When the nominations for the MTN SAMA Awards were announced last month they dished out more than a few surprises.
Some surprises were welcome and some, well, you know…
Turns out 2013 is the Year of the Newcomer, with the super fly Toya Delazy and her album ‘Due Drop Deluxe’ picking up 6 nominations – Newcomer of the Year, Best Pop Album, Record of the Year, Best Producer with Jax Panik and twice for Remix of the Year, one each with Pascal & Pearce and ClassyMenace.
ChianoSky notched up 5 nominations while The Muffinz (big things in store for these dudes, HUGE), DJ Vetkuk vs. Mahoota and BlackByrd picked up 4 nominations each.
The most interesting category though, is the MTN Record of the Year, which is the only category in the MTN SAMAs where the winner is decided by the public through SMS votes. The public are given a list of 20 nominees that dominated the airwaves in 2012, based on the number of times a track was played across SA radio stations.
SMS voting lines opened on the 20th of March and close on the 9th of May. The final five nominees will then be determined and voting lines will re-open on the 10th of May and the winner will be announced during the live broadcast of the SAMAs.
To vote, SMS the alphabet letter of your favourite artist/s to 083 123 7262 (083 123 SAMA) and keep in mind that standard SMS rates apply.

The MTN SAMA 19 awards will be broadcast on Saturday the 11th of May at 8:30pm on SABC 1. It’s honestly one of the funniest nights of the year. I urge you to tune into that shit.
