Mannywellz last graced us with his mesmerising R&B arrangements a year ago, on the release of his self-produced EP Mirage. It was a rich blend of powerful harmonies, unique instrumentation and soulful Afropop grooves, all of which celebrated his Nigerian roots whilst simultaneously taking the music of his upbringing in a contemporary direction.
Now, following on from the subsequent release of a glorious live version of Mirage, Mannywellz is back with a new single and video, “Peace”.
Written alongside rising Nigerian songstress Tems, known best for her lauded single “Essence” with Afrobeats star Wizkid, the track is a vulnerable offering that speaks about social media addiction and finding peace in the busy cycle of life.
And with a slow-paced bassline that brings a subdued yet warm energy to the song, Mannywellz once again shows off his free-flowing talent for making Afrosoul music – and making it well.
The video, directed by Quinci Bryant and Sarah Lorentzen, shows Manny centre stage, seemingly dancing his troubles away, shot to the backdrop of a sunny, coastal Los Angeles landscape, and while it offers little else visually, it ultimately adds to the easy-going openness of the track.
