Pretoria East hailing rap duo Art Department PTA (Tone Lakeside and Navy Seal), drop their lead single off their latest EP and it’s the next banger for your weekend jol.
“Spotlight Shining” enlists singer Tifah Veins for the hook on the single, which shimmers in its reminder to “keep shining”. But it’s the chorus that gives the track the quality of a summer banger ripe for your house party indulgence.
Through the rest of it, the rappers trade verses on stacking money and repping the city of Tshwane – referred to as Blue Smoke City – and Art Department PTA wear their influences on their sleeves, name dropping both the West Coast rap anthem “Ain’t nuthin’ but a “G” thang” by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, as well as “C.R.E.A.M” by the Wu Tang Clan.
The verses, however, rely on hip hop cliches that ultimately make for forgettable lyrical content. But overall “Spotlight Shining” is an ultra chilled hip hop joint that combines Afro-pop sounds with an obvious gangster rap influence. And it’s easy to imagine Tifah Veins’s hook on a deep house track.
