RxSolo keeps the good stuff coming from his self-made studio with a minimalist trip down memory lane in his new single “Candy Shop”. Soaked in childhood nostalgia – for the era of the Dragon Ball Z tazo’s you’d find in your packet of chips, and those collectable rubber tops from Coke bottles – he navigates sentimentalities over a chiming polka dot synth.
It encapsulates an inherent longing for the “better days” – although when those were isn’t exactly clear. Maybe pre-pandemic, maybe even further back than that to the time when RxSolo bumped into Mos Def himself outside a garage when he still had that World Passport. Remember that? Or maybe it was further back still, when R1 could buy you a bulging bagful of chappies and eclairs.
A pink candy shop serves as the backdrop to his DIY accompanying video. “Keep my mind ventilated/ everything I fucking hated/ is sitting in my room at the studio,” he spits over the cruising back-beat, while potential customers vie for his attention – and fail to catch it. It’s sentimental, it’s simplistic, and while it’s not exactly groundbreaking, RxSolo continues his steady upward climb.
