Indie slash punk slash pop outfit Year of Dogs are back again – and this time they’re dipping their toes (paws?) into electronica, too. Based on the principle that two is, in fact, better than one – especially where new music is concerned – the Cape Town-based four-piece have released the follow up to their single “Take It Away, Human” – aptly named “Take It Away, Computer”.
Performing a kind of musical mitosis with the help of producer Josh Berry, the band has taken one song blueprint and created two nearly identical songs from it. The difference? One has been made exclusively using real life (aka acoustic) instruments, while the other is a wholly digital offering (human vs computer – get it?).
An audial experiment designed to highlight the dichotomy between digital and real-life when it comes to music-making – and throwing in some social commentary about society’s collective digital addiction while they’re at it – the result is two offerings that, while evenly matched in groovy-ness, each have their own fresh sound.
“Take It Away, Computer” falls somewhere between computer game and space odyssey sound-wise, awash with retro-inspired synths and a bouncing beat that makes it extremely head bop-able.
