Yndian Mynah’s live video for “Designasaurs” is as good an explanation of the band as you’re going to find.
If you haven’t heard of them by now I’m going to assume you went into lockdown long before the rest of the country, so allow me to catch you up. Yndian Mynah are a Cape Town based psych-rock band defined by stretches of the ethereal broken up by heavy, manic walls of sound that veer towards the harder side of things.
“Designasaurs” was written in honour of Tool guitarist Adam Jones and his days spent as a sculptor and special effects designer on the set of Jurassic Park. It’s peak Yndian Mynah, and the video, shot live at Mercury Live (RIP), captures the band’s energy beautifully.
With loads of double-exposure and bright, flashing lights it acts as a visualisation of the spectrum between calm and chaos that the band has created for themselves. The moments of peace are reflected in long, relaxed shots while things become a lot more energised and fractured as the intensity picks up.
Yndian Mynah are forming a strong identity for themselves and the video for “Designasaurs” will go a long way in ingraining it in the minds of a lot of people.
